Carmel H. Abramovitch
composer, drummer, violist da gamba
Born in 1990 in Karkur - once a rural and magical place north to Tel-Aviv. I started the piano at the age of 3, as piano was part of the family atmosphere.
I began taking professional drumming lessons at the age of 10 and continued to master the instrument through high-school, and my B.A in Musical Education. Mastering the drums gave me an expert sense on polyrhythms and odd-meters, as well as made me keen with virtuosic genres such as Progressive Metal and Fusion.
During my B.A, I gained experience as a participant in professional choirs and symphonic orchestras, and was advised by my harmony instructor to take private lessons with well-known arranger Rafi Kadishzon, with whom I learned counterpoint and instrumentation.
By 2019, I had arranged for orchestras, chamber groups (including Ensemble Sonatine which I founded), recorded and produced Progressive Metal music - I decided I need to learn more and focus on classical composition techniques. I began my master's in Music Composition at Haifa University. Inspired by the teachings of Dr. Alon Schab, I got invested in old music, and started taking lessons on the Viola da Gamba with Amit Tiefenbrunn - to whom I am also grateful for the extensive knowledge on aesthetics of the Baroque and its integration with contemporary genres as well. I have also participated in the master classes with Teodoro Bau at the Urbino Festival, as well as in other courses, to further develop my expertise in the art.
My thesis, which explores the Concerto Grosso genre, has taught me a lot about critical thinking, and allowed me to view composition differently. Alongside the paper, I also composed a Concerto Grosso of my own - using some of the things I learned, and in which I implemented musical ideas I already had. It was performed by a Baroque Orchestra in summer 2024. My advisors were Prof. Oded Zehavi (composition) and Dr. Alon Schab (historical musicology).
I am a very busy tutor in high-school music courses, and extremely grateful for that. I still take part in Metal groups as a drummer. My main focus is on Ensmeble Sonatine, where my compositions and arrangements are performed - and where all my knowledge and love for rhythm and antique sounds come together.
